Startup Weekend Tech Valley – First Night (at GrandSlam Alley, Troy, New York)

By Erik Bunaes, Endorphin Advisors

Startup Weekend Tech Valley - Crowd1

Opening remarks and ground rules at Startup Weekend Tech Valley

Startup Weekend Tech Valley kicked off last night (March 2, 2012) in Troy, New York at Grand Slam Alley, a new technology incubator and angel investors group.

It was an incredible, energy-filled first night, with more than 50 entrepreneurs pitching the crowd with their ideas, in hopes to generating excitement, building a team on the spot, and working through the weekend toward the final pitch night on Sunday.

Entrepreneurs are competing for attention and talent and more than $30,000 in prize money in an “American Idol”-type contest.

The night started off with an introduction and overview of the weekend’s ground rules from event organizer and Grandslam Alley CEO, John Max Miller. He was followed by comments from two tech luminaries Martin Babinec (Upstate Venture Connect) on building out the upstate technology eco-system, and Tobi Saulnier, the CEO of 1st Playable Productions.

Entrepreneurs then lined up to give 60-second pitches in a rapid-fire “Pitchfire” format. They had to pitch their idea, describe solution they want to provide and say what resources and team they need to build to get it done, and attract interest from the crowd of potential partners, all in 60-seconds!

It was fast and exciting, with the crowd cheering for great pitches, unique ideas and energetic entrepreneurs. The range of ideas and solutions was mind-boggling and amazing!

If you want to join the event and see top teams present their fleshed-out work to the panel of judges, come join us on Sunday evening. They are competing for prize money and investor attention. Find out more details and buy your $40 ticket, which includes dinner, beer and networking at http://techvalley.startupweekend.org/!

The rest of the weekend’s schedule is here: http://techvalley.startupweekend.org/event/

Academic support for these economically disadvantaged students includes: mandatory, weekly homework/tutoring sessions; PSAT/SAT preparation courses; Advanced Placement/University in the High School classes; summer enrichment and college preparedness programs; and graphing calculators. Many of these students are returning to the area to attend graduate school or for employment opportunities and serving as positive role models for the next generation.
